Abstract
A full-term male infant was noted to have bilateral ‘eye swelling’ and ‘redness’ at 24 hours of life on the postpartum ward. According to his mother, the redness and swelling had been present since birth and progressed to include a rash. There was no eye discharge noted and he was opening his eyes. He remained afebrile, active and was feeding at the breast. He was born to an otherwise healthy 31-year-old woman (gravida 3, para 1) by an uneventful scheduled caesarean delivery. He did not require resuscitation and received routine newborn care. His mother had received Clindamycin preoperatively for a Penicillin allergy. Maternal serology was protective and there was no history of maternal fever or lesions. His examination revealed a well appearing, appropriate size-for-age, nondysmorphic male infant with symmetric bilateral eyelid erythema and edema and with a pustular rash over the face and trunk. There was no eye discharge or conjunctivitis. His cardiac, respiratory, abdominal and neurological examinations were normal.
