Abstract
Une fois le sérieux non-ironique de Guy Maddin bien établi, l’auteur décrit le caractère historique et pastiche du mélodrame chez le cinéaste manitobain. Il suggère ensuite que les hypothèses sur le mélodrame avancées par Thomas Elsaesser, Laura Mulvey, et surtout Geoffrey Nowell-Smith s’appliquent, au moins indirectement, à l’oeuvre de Maddin. L’excès mélodramatique apparaît ainsi comme étant symptomatique—voire même somatique—des blocages et des échecs de la culture contemporaine. L’article présente en conclusion une lecture du cinéma de Maddin en tant qu’exemple du “mélodrame canadien”.
