En la industria quimica y petrolera se hace necesario incorporar sistemas que permitan la separacion simultanea de fases liquidas de mezclas inmiscibles y corrientes de gases o vapores, constituyendo corrientes de tres fases o trifasicas. En el presente articulo se realiza una recopilacion de los diversos tipos de separadores para mezclas como las mencionadas, asi como se muestra un criterio de seleccion y dimensionamiento. Se ha desarrollado una metodologia que permite el calculo de las variables geometricas del equipo mediante un procedimiento directo, dado que los metodos convencionales habitualmente requieren la iteracion para definir la relacion L/D (longitud / diametro) mas apropiada. 1. Introduccion La separacion de mezclas de gas, liquido ligero y liquido pesado se logra mediante una combinacion apropiada de los siguientes factores: gravedad, fuerza centrifuga y de choque dentro del cuerpo del recipiente. El principio de operacion basico es el proporcionar una velocidad suficientemente baja para que el vapor y los liquidos se separen. Tambien se debe considerar apropiadamente el volumen de almacenamiento de liquido. La velocidad de asentamiento esta basada en el fenomeno que ocurre cuando un cuerpo se mueve en el seno de un fluido viscoso, donde la resistencia que presenta el medio depende de la velocidad relativa y de la forma del cuerpo.
