Ce projet vise la détermination des concentrations de AI2O3, de NaOH et de dans divers échantillons de liqueur Bayer synthétique en exploitant les variations spectrales de Tabsorbance et de l'indice de réfraction du mélange en fonction de sa composition chimique. L'expérimentation a été réalisée entièrement à l'Université du Québec à Chicoutimi au cours de l'automne 2004, y compris la préparation des liqueurs synthétiques à l'aide d'un chiffrier EXCEL fourni par le Centre de recherche et de développement Arvida. Les mesures d'absorbance ont été réalisées sur un spectrophotomètre UV-VIS-NIR Zeiss PMQII aux longueurs d'onde entre 250 et 1700 nanometres. Pour les mesures d'indice de réfraction, un spectroréfractomètre prototype a été conçu, dans le but d'atteindre une précision de 0,00002 en indice de réfraction et couvrant le domaine spectral 350-1100 nanometres. Trente-cinq combinaisons de concentrations ont été utilisées en concordance avec un protocole expérimental du type "plan central composite rotatable". Ce protocole garantit une répartition systématique des trois concentrations, de telle sorte que chacune peut être considérée à tour de rôle comme une variable indépendante. Les grandeurs mesurées servent alors de prédicteurs à l'intérieur d'un modèle statistique dont l'inversion fournira les concentrations pour des échantillons inconnus. Comme exemples de tels prédicteurs, il y a l'indice de réfraction moyen dans le visible, l'absorbance à 265 nm, la dérivée seconde de cette absorbance, l'absorbance infrarouge, etc. Dans l'ultraviolet aux longueurs d'onde voisines de 265 nm, l'absorbance est principalement contrôlée par la concentration en alumine, alors que dans l'infrarouge aux longueurs d'onde voisines de 1680 nm, l'absorbance est principalement contrôlée par la concentration en caustique. Par des mesures de densité optique uniquement, ces deux concentrations sont obtenues avec une indétermination typique de 5% en raison de l'influence mineure du carbonate sur l'absorbance. Une mesure additionnelle d'indice de réfraction dans un domaine spectral approprié est nécessaire pour déterminer indépendamment la concentration en carbonate et diminuer ainsi l'incertitude sur les concentrations en caustique et alumine à environ 1%.
