La sociologie de Zygmunt Bauman a connu des réceptions très diverses, selon les contextes intellectuels et les périodes d’écriture. En étudiant le travail prolifique de l’auteur, cet article vise à décrire les différentes étapes de son cheminement, pour saisir le processus menant à de telles disparités. Cette analyse tente d’expliquer la faible réception du penseur dans la sphère intellectuelle française, ainsi que plusieurs polémiques engendrées par son œuvre dans le monde universitaire anglophone. Enfin, cet article vise à définir partiellement la forme et le statut de ce que Bauman a appelé ces dernières années la « sociologie liquide ».
