Abstract
In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, teachers in Canada, like their counterparts in many other countries, engaged in militant activity. In virtually every province, they left the classroom and made a public commitment to improve salaries, benefits, and working conditions. Some strikes lasted for only a day or two, with only a few schools involved, while others lasted for several months and involved thousands of teachers. This paper will first provide a very brief history of teachers’ activism and strikes in Canada and relate them to the changes to and differences among Canadian educational systems. Some of the reasons why teachers either engaged in activism or refused to do so will then be explored. One major reason for lack of activism relates to questions of individual and collective teacher identity and the role of a certain professionalization. The history of Canadian educational systems is based on a state project to promote a particular ideology of professionalism, which has very much worked against teacher activism.
