Abstract
Professional oriental dance in Cairo is meant for tourists. Professionals of entertainment adjusted their performances to audiences’ expectations. The relationship of domination imposed by tourists’ demands was reversed by a recovering of oriental dance under a local banner. A broad Egyptian audience attends those performances. It presents the dance as a window into the identity of the group, approved by a part of the population. Oriental dancers from abroad, present in Cairo for a quarter of century now, hesitate between the accordance with a model and strategies to promote their own differences. Every year, a festival in Cairo crystallizes those stakes at the level of the current worldwide network of the apprentices of oriental dance.
