L’auteur évoque sa pratique d’alphabétisation de travailleurs maliens en France qui l’ont convaincue que le travail scientifique n’est qu’un terme du processus de connaissance, car pour connaître un groupe, un phénomène social, il faut élucider les relations complexes entre imaginaire, symbolique, réel, chercher « avec sa tête et son coeur ». Actuellement, en Guadeloupe, elle tente de contribuer à l’élaboration d’une sociolinguistique antillaise. La recherche-action l’a conduite à radicaliser son engagement politique en travaillant avec des parents et des enfants de classes populaires qui subissent les effets de la violence culturelle qu’impose l’enseignement en français. À travers le rejet du créole, c’est un rejet de tout ce qu’est et ce que vit la population qui se produit. L’expérience de la mise sur pied d’un centre d’éducation populaire où l’on essaie de fonder une pédagogie de l’imaginaire et de la libération, où le créole est langue d’enseignement et de communication est rapportée ici comme conséquence concrète d’un processus de recherche-action.
