Abstract
Quelques universités médiévales se sont données un récit mythique de fondation afin d’accroître leur prestige en repoussant au plus loin dans le temps leurs origines et en associant leur création à un souverain illustre. La translatio studii faisait de l’Université de Paris l’héritière d’un savoir né en Grèce, et ensuite transporté de Rome à Paris par Charlemagne. L’Université d’Orléans faisait remonter ses origines à l’empereur Aurelius. Quant à Oxford et Cambridge, l’une attribuait sa fondation au roi Alfred ou à des savants grecs venus en Angleterre avec le Troyen Brutus, alors que l’autre faisait du prince Cantaber son créateur. Enfin, Bologne estimait avoir été instituée par l’empereur Théodose II. Ces mythes s’inscrivent soit dans l’histoire de l’humanité selon le modèle inspiré par saint Jérôme, soit pour l’Angleterre dans l’Histoire des rois de Bretagne de Geoffroy de Monmouth. L’article examine chacun des mythes en détail et avance quelques hypothèses quant aux motivations des universités à se doter de tels récits de fondation.
