Abstract
This research looks at immigrants’ citizenship in relation to the funeral rituals that are part of their culture. The author argues that denying immigrants’ funeral rituals constitutes a breach of their citizenship rights. The discussion focuses on the disruption caused to Congolese Canadians’ funeral ceremonies through refusals to grant temporary visas to family members from the Congo so that they can complete their funeral ceremony as prescribed by their culture with the Congolese Canadians. The discussion demonstrates that the political recognition of immigrants’ funeral rituals regardless of their cultural background and socioeconomic status may help immigrants feel valued and fully integrated into their host countries.
