Abstract
Cet article réalise une revue des principales influences qui ont marqué le développement de la théorie et de la pratique du travail communautaire au Royaume-Uni. L’auteur analyse le contexte politique dans lequel ont travaillé les animateurs communautaires et, plus particulièrement, l’évolution de leur relation avec l’État. Pour que le travail communautaire conduise au changement social, les animateurs communautaires doivent interpréter clairement la nature de l’État, les diverses manières dont les conflits sociaux se déroulent à travers lui et les voies offertes par leur appui et leur participation à l’action progressiste. En Grande-Bretagne, ces questions sont des enjeux majeurs dans la mesure où elles renvoient à l’évolution récente des relations entre le gouvernement central et les gouvernements locaux et aux conflits qui en découlent.
