Abstract
In dit proefschrift werd onderzoek gedaan naar de rol en de autonomie van het EU Hof van Justitie binnen Europese integratieprocessen.Of het Hof de autonomie bezit om Europeaniseringsprocessen verder te leiden dan wat origineel was voorzien door de EU lidstaten is een vraagstuk dat de literatuur reeds lang bezighoudt.Tegenstrijdige analyses van het Hof als óf een instelling die trouw de politieke preferenties van de lidstaten opvolgt, óf een entiteit die tegen zulke preferenties ingaat, verdelen reeds lang de politiek wetenschappelijke werken over het Hof van Justitie.De maatschappelijke relevantie van een correct inzicht in de precieze rol en autonomie van het Hof is groot.Geïmpliceerd in vraagstukken over de rol van de rechterlijke macht op Unie niveau zijn bredere vragen over de democratische opzet en toerekenbaarheid van de Europese Unie algemeen.In 2016, tegen de achtergrond van de naderende Brexit en een algemene trend richting een vergroot gebruik van nationale fora en instellingen, zijn zulke vragen pertinenter dan ooit.
