Abstract
La transnationalisation musicale des mouvements évangéliques soulève des problèmes identitaires qu’il convient d’analyser à l’échelle locale. Chez les Maale du Sud-ouest éthiopien, dont il est question ici, l’évangélisation protestante a débuté dans les années 1960, sous l’impulsion de missionnaires wolayta, leurs voisins du Nord. Les premiers Maale convertis au protestantisme se sont appropriés l’hymnologie wolayta avant de créer leurs propres hymnes, les Maale zamuro. Si les zamuro des années 1960 se distinguent réellement des musiques « traditionnelles », les Maale évangéliques ont progressivement « ethnicisé » leur hymnologie. Bien qu’ils aient conscience de cette évolution, les Évangéliques soutiennent que leurs « musiques croyantes » (amano zamuro) se sont toujours différenciées des « musiques terrestres » (alamo kotso) des Traditionalistes. La mise en regard des discours des musiciens et des résultats de l’analyse musicale révèle les ambivalences identitaires des Maale évangéliques des années 1960 à aujourd’hui.
