Abstract
Cet article propose une théorie causale du changement social qui déclenche le développement économique. La méthode consiste à comparer ce qui a déterminé le choix entre le pouvoir de l'État ou le pouvoir de classe comme moyen d'accumulation du capital et d'innovation sociale. La comparaison porte sur quatre exemples historiques : Angleterre, Allemagne, Japon et U.R.S.S. L'article conclut que ce sont les idéologies de ceux qui sont au pouvoir qui déterminent si c'est le pouvoir de l'État ou le pouvoir de la classe qui a été utilisé dans ces quatre cas.Toutefois, les idéologies sont considérées comme causales seulement en ce sens qu'elles déterminent laquelle des structures de pouvoir sera utilisée et comment. Le pouvoir de créer ces nouvelles structures nécessaires se trouve dans la monopolisation de la violence légale et dans la propriété des moyens de production par l'État et la classe dominante.
