Versions of the Self: <i>Mouvance</i> and Authorship in Heinrich von Morungen

Abstract
Many medieval lyrics have been transmitted in multiple manuscript versions. The discrepancies between these versions are often attributed to a loose medieval conception of authorship that left later redactors unconcerned with the integrity of a work. Using songs by the twelfth-century German lyric poet Heinrich von Morungen, I argue that variation can in fact be part of the project of fashioning an authorial self. By embedding manifold aesthetic options and ethical ideals into their songs and providing space for creative rearrangement by later singers, Morungen and other poets establish their reputations as masters of the realm of poetic possibility.
