Le jésuite Jacob Balde (1604-1668) fut sans doute le plus remarquable poète latin de l’Allemagne catholique. Lorsqu’il publia en 1663 à Munich la première partie de son Urania, il avait déjà gagné le surnom flatteur d’« Horace allemand » mais, soucieux de se mesurer aux autres poètes passés et présents, il souhaitait aborder un genre nouveau.
