Abstract
The absence of a signature in a letter is not necessarily an oversight; it can be an act of will as meaningful as the act of signing. This practice of anonymous signature, common enough in printed texts, is also a form of graphic delinquency. In the 20th century it was at the heart of famous cases such as Angele Laval’s in Tulle (1921) and durably associated with hysteria, but there is a more ordinary practice of anonymous writing which a police department, like the vice squad in Paris, both collects and combines. The analysis of these archives draws another portrait of the anonymous signer as a citizen of the society of control.
