Les jeunes étrangers partagent avec leurs contemporains suisses les difficultés actuelles d’insertion sur le marché de l’apprentissage et du travail, à cette nuance près néanmoins, qu’en raison de leur origine sociale et des difficultés scolaires, ils plafonnent au niveau de la formation professionnelle. De plus ils sont sommés, par le pays d’accueil et par celui d’origine, de se définir en termes nationaux : l’identité des jeunes devenant ainsi le terrain d’une confrontation qui a pour enjeu l’enracinement et la loyauté de ce groupe. Le problème de l’identité de la deuxième génération est soulevé publiquement au moment où celle-ci entre massivement dans la vie active. Cependant, l’image que le pays d’accueil en donne est essentiellement psychologisante, mettant en relief la problématique de l’adolescence et dissimulant les enjeux sociaux et culturels de ce moment-clef. Les stratégies concrètes d’insertion professionnelle adoptées par les jeunes étrangers peuvent être considérées comme révélatrices du difficile processus de négociation entre diverses logiques et de l’affirmation progressive de leur identité; elles recèlent une réponse à la question largement débattue aujourd’hui, de savoir si l’intégration de la deuxième génération dans la société d’accueil se réalisera ou non sans résistances.
