La investigación en torno a la modelación matemática ha llevado al cambio de currículo en diferentes sistemas educativos en el mundo. Estudios recientes han mostrado como variable importante en la modelación matemática el proceso de comunicación entre los estudiantes para la resolución de tareas complejas. El presente estudio tiene como propósito comprender cómo estos procesos de comunicación apoyan el aprendizaje de las matemáticas en la resolución de situaciones problema. Aplicando la teoría de la actividad, se analizaron las representaciones de cuatro estudiantes acerca de la noción de covariación, así como su evolución a través del uso de una metodología que privilegia el debate científico y la autorreflexión. Los resultados muestran que las representaciones intuitivas de los estudiantes tienen un carácter funcional y espontáneo, y se pueden modificar a través de la interacción y el diálogo dentro de un trabajo en equipo. Con ello se promueve la equidad en la construcción del conocimiento.
