Abstract
Examining how language has functioned in the construction of Franco-Ontarian identities since the late 1960s, the essay addresses the place of subjectivity and the personal in the always changing and incomplete production of historiographic consciousness. Through theoretical work on memory, the author explores how personal objects from a family collection inform the cultural history of Franco-Ontarians. Feminist and postcolonial theories are engaged in the challenge to the received dichotomy of memory and history.
