Abstract
Avant les « guerres de religion », le XVIe siècle français connut une véritable croisade contre les vaudois du Luberon. Ce fut « l’exécution de Cabrières et Mérindol », du nom de deux villages, l’un en Comtat venaissin, l’autre en Provence. En moins d’une semaine l’armée saccagea le pays, provoquant la fuite de ces paysans « hérétiques ». Le dernier bastion, et le seul à vrai dire, qui résista aux troupes françaises et pontificales unies pour l’occasion, fut Cabrières-d’Avignon. Ses remparts protégeaient les habitants des opérations et exactions soldatesques. Pourtant, quand l’armée se présenta devant ce bourg fortifié, la résistance ne dura guère ; quelques boulets de canon en vinrent à bout ; il s’ensuivit un massacre. L’intérêt vient des différentes versions de la prise de la ville et des événements qui suivirent parvenues jusqu’à nous ainsi que des conséquences qui découlèrent de ce traumatisme sur la population du pays et plus largement encore.
