Abstract
Sur l'Acropole, Renan avait soupiré : "Le monde entier me parut barbare". Ce constat est très largement partagé au XIXe siècle. Maurras le fait aussi, voyant des barbares un peu partout : des Américains, des chrétiens, le personnel politique de la 3e République. Rien ne semble échapper à l'accablant constat, sinon la nostalgie d'une Grèce bien lointaine, pervertie par Rome. Cette barbarie généralisée fait la toile de fond de la construction par Maurras d'un troisième terme au delà de l'opposition entre les Grecs et les Barbares : l'identité romaine, que Maurras va progressivement retrouver puis développer.
