Abstract
This chapter examines the relationship between patient-provider interaction and patient and provider outcomes. Patient outcomes include satisfaction adherence to treatment and patient health outcomes ranging from self-reporting (e.g. reporting reductions in concern about symptoms) to measures of physiologic status. Provider outcomes include malpractice complaints and the length of the consultation. The findings presented in this chapter were garnered from both qualitative and quantitative studies. A consistent message from studies using different methods enhances credibility and the importance of multimethod approaches is discussed in the section on developing a research agenda for the 21st century.
