Abstract

The study of the emergence of sleep and waking 
\nduring embryonic life forms a fundamental part of 
\nunderstanding sleep physiology. Electroencephalography 
\n(EEG) is one of the most basic tools used to investigate sleep. 
\nWe describe the preliminary design of a telemetry system 
\ncomposed of conductive polymer electrodes connected to a 
\ntransmitter and a receiver. As an additional benefit, the system 
\nis electromagnetically compatible with Positron Emission 
\nTomography (PET) scanners, permitting the simultaneous 
\nacquisition of PET images and EEG data. The system was 
\ndeveloped for recording chicken embryo EEG signals. 
\nElectromagnetic interference is avoided using an infrared data 
\nlink for communication. The system makes use of six 
\nconductive polymer electrodes, with dimensions on a 
\nmicrometer scale, connected via a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) 
\nconnector to a small, low power IR transmitter. This 
\ntransmitter is optically coupled to a receiver, that it is 
\nconnected to a PC for signal processing and data storage.
