Abstract
City-regions now occupy a central place in the geography of global capitalism as hitherto nascent sites of regulation; conceptualizations of their influence on political-economic processes have been the subject of debate among geographers in recent years. Two competing perspectives, the territorial and the relational, posit such sites as coherent, bounded places with a significant level of autonomy or as porous, contingent spaces that are conditioned by influences spanning multiple levels and scales. This article reviews the city-region concept, highlighting the context in which city-regions have emerged as new sites of political-economic coordination and assessing the two competing perspectives on how such sites are constituted. The review concludes by considering what a bridging of these perspectives might mean for how we think about and study city-regions.
