Abstract
Le travail social en France est organisé autour de deux grandes fonctions : une fonction d’assistance et de protection et une fonction d’éducation spécialisée et de réadaptation. Cette dernière est assurée par les éducateurs spécialisés, les moniteurs éducateurs, les aides médico-pédagogiques (175 000 postes environ) et les grands domaines d’intervention sont les « handicapés mentaux et sociaux ». L’auteur retrace l’histoire sociale de la constitution de la profession d’éducateur spécialisé, structurée par la dialectique équipements-personnels spécialisés et acculée à devoir proposer une autre image d’elle-même pour garantir son existence sociale et assurer son avenir.
