Ce chapitre analyse l’évolution du métier d’inspecteur dans un contexte de mise en œuvre d’une politique d’évaluation externe des établissements scolaires dans trois pays européens (Angleterre, France, Suisse). Adoptant une perspective de sociologie des groupes professionnels dans l’action publique, il interroge les tensions identitaires professionnelles introduites par cette nouvelle politique et les pratiques évaluatives, effectives ou déclarées, auxquelles elle donne lieu. Il mobilise pour cela deux types de matériaux. Les uns proviennent d’une recherche exploratoire de deux ans dans six territoires éducatifs à partir d’une analyse documentaire, d’une revue de la littérature professionnelle et scientifique, d’observations et de 101 entretiens. Les autres sont issus de l’analyse distanciée d’un des auteurs, formateur de cadres, administrateur de l’Éducation nationale française et spécialiste en management public. L’analyse montre ainsi une réception et une reformulation de l’impératif d’évaluation des établissements scolaires par les inspecteurs très différente d’un système éducatif à l’autre selon les configurations d’action publique et les identités professionnelles en présence, et ce même si des tensions identitaires communes peuvent être mises en évidence.
