Effect of body size on response to emersion and molt increment of post-ovigerous female American lobsters Homarus americanus (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) (Decapoda: Nephropidae) from southern and northern Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada

Stocks of the American lobster Homarus americanus (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) are facing major environmental changes, and reproductively active females are a vulnerable and key component of these stocks. This study compares the capacity of mature females from the southern and the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada to withstand environmental stress. Molt increments and responses to a short-term emersion challenge (90 min) were compared among post-ovigerous females from two southern (Caraquet and Toney River) and two northern (Anticosti and Gaspé) sites in controlled laboratory conditions. The females from Caraquet had the smallest carapace length (CL) followed by those from Toney River and those from northern sites. Over a size range of 74–127 mm CL, molt increments were similar among sites (median (Q1–Q3), 7.3 mm (5.7–8.2) and unrelated to body size. Relative molt increments (% CL) were greater in smaller females, suggesting greater allocation of energy for growth. Emersion induced accumulation of haemolymph lactate, indicative of metabolic acidosis. Lactate increased with decreasing body size and with increasing haemolymph proteins, and thus, was higher in small-size, non-molted lobsters. The study shows that body size is an important driver for both growth investment and sensitivity to emersion in southern and northern females. Small-size ovigerous females are particularly sensitive to emersion and likely to other environmental stressors, and consequently. southern Gulf stocks with higher proportions of smaller females, are more vulnerable. This study provides novel information on molt increments variation in mature females useful for the refinement of Gulf of St. Lawrence lobster demographic models.
