Abstract
A double crisis without precedent came to disrupt events at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. The first one between the Canadian government, the Communist government of Peking, and the Republic of China began on May 17, 1976. In the end, the Republic of China withdrew from the Games. The second crisis occurred a few days before the opening of the Games. Many African National Olympic Committees wished to boycott the Games to denounce the presence of New Zealand, which had allowed its national Rugby team to go to South Africa. Three determining elements were to accelerate the decision taken by these African governments to boycott the Games: the elections in New Zealand, the Soweto massacre, and the meeting of the Ministers of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in Mauritius.
