Multicultural Science Education in Non-Western Societies: An Iranian Example

Abstract
This study uses curriculum analysis in order to understand how “multicultural science education” (MSE) is perceived in a society like Iran. Multicultural Education (ME) has not progressed equally across the world. ME has had slow practical progress in non-Anglo-Saxon countries and the curricula from many countries with very diverse ethnic backgrounds do not reflect a need for ME. Curriculum guidelines and elementary science textbooks were collected and their contents were coded and qualitatively analyzed to how characteristics of multicultural education manifest themselves in these texts. Gender, (dis)ability, ethnicity, geographical area, language, social class, and life style were factors considered in our analysis. The results of the analysis show little evidence of culturally responsive curriculum in any aspect.
