Abstract
The Congregation was one of the powerful political and religious myths of 19th-century France. Its members were conspiracy theorists who conducted ultra-royalist and ultramontane intrigues via a secret network of provincial branches. One of these, the Societe des bonnes etudes, established in the Latin Quarter, recruited mainly among law students. Drawing from the Congregation’s archives, this paper builds a sociology of the “Jesuits in short gowns,” as its members were named in derision. It describes how students in the 1820s socialized in these “ultra” circles. Comparing the membership lists of five such associations, a network analysis makes it possible to arrive at a richer picture than that which had prevailed since the 1826 controversy. At least four profiles emerge: the unconcerned, the intellectual, the devout, and the political.
