Abstract
On ne peut donner une définition acceptable de l’éducation populaire aujourd’hui en France car elle se présente comme une réalité insaisissable, sans réelle unité au plan des pratiques, sans autonomie politique ou idéologique, sans visibilité indiscutable. L’éducation populaire a perdu les traits de mouvement social qu’elle avait dans l’après-guerre pour devenir soit animation socio-culturelle (action communautaire) soit formation permanente. Ces deux grandes catégories de pratiques constituent deux domaines stables et autonomes qui sont devenus les points de référence de toutes les pratiques éducatives et culturelles distinctes de celles transmises par l’institution scolaire. L’article décrit de façon synthétique les transformations récentes de l’éducation populaire en France.
