O Brasil possui uma escassez de dados sobre o território. Isto acontece pela falta de compartilhamento de dados nas esferas locais, regionais e nacional. O não compartilhamento deste tipo de dado gera a recoleta e o desperdício do dinheiro público que poderia ser destinado para outros fins. Com isto, surge a necessidade de uma estrutura que compartilhe estes dados, facilitando o acesso à informação espacial e reduzindo os gastos com coleta dos mesmos. Desde 2008, a Infraestrutura Nacional de Dados Espaciais - INDE, no Brasil, vem sendo discutida. Uma IDE é fundamentada na concepção de uma infraestrutura baseada na relação hierárquica entre as diversas esferas governamentais, envolvendo não só a padronização e a definição de metadados, mas também desenvolvendo políticas de compartilhamento e acesso aos dados geoespaciais. Este artigo descreve, em linhas gerais, o que é uma IDE e como ela se relaciona com o cadastro e a gestão territorial.
