Abstract
Montréal, comme bien d’autres métropoles, devient de plus en plus cosmopolite. La multiplication des cultures transplantées engendre-t-elle de nouvelles formes de culture ou ne s’essouffle-t-elle pas rapidement, au gré des replis, des nostalgies et des schizophrénies qui sont le lot de tous les déracinés ? Et le projet transculturel n’est-il pas fortement handicapé par la difficulté de définir, à Montréal, ce qui constitue le centre de la société, et donc ce autour de quoi les identités collectives des immigrés pourraient se recomposer ? L’auteur de cet essai de « sociologie de l’entre-deux » voit dans la complexité et l’ambiguïté de certaines attitudes la préfiguration de mécanismes susceptibles de se généraliser à toute la population.
