Abstract
In this paper we present the methodology used to perform 3D Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) investigations of the twophase flow in the draft tube of a propeller hydraulic turbine model operating at partial discharge. In this configuration, the flow in the draft tube exhibits a helical vortex, with or without cavitating core, inducing strong pressure fluctuations within the entire hydraulic circuit at a frequency representing about one-third of the rotation speed of the turbine. PIV is intended to provide a database on the flow field with and without cavitation in the draft tube cone, immediately downstream of the runner, at a discharge associated with a vortex rope.
