Abstract
Before and after the First World War, many European countries along with Canada established a Catholic theatre movement working for the total reform of the stage. Among amateurs in particular, the proliferation of troupes, the creation of reviews and a Christian repertoire demonstrate the same aims but also the same problems. During the 1920s and 1930s especially, the example offered by the French was decisive. Henri Gheon’s troupe, the Compagnons de Notre-Dame, provided a model for practitioners and Henri Brochet’s review, Jeux, treteaux et personnages, published news of Catholic theatre for example in Belgium, Spain, Yugoslavia and Quebec. Their plays were translated or performed in several languages. Paradoxically, despite this influence on an international scale, the success of their contribution in France did not always follow.
