Languages and School Selection: French Expatriates in Canada? From Ethnocentrism to Diversity

Abstract
The schooling strategies of French families settled in Toronto, an English-speaking city, are investigated from field research on the opening of a French school. Complex sociolinguistic behaviors emerged. Attitudes towards school were linked to the socialization choices each migrant made after negotiations with their family circle. The linguistic and/or cultural mix of couples was challenged. The newly established school was considered a place to develop competencies beyond the linguistic split of Torontian and Canadian societies. However the multiplication of antinomic objectives opposed the supporters of an elite international Francophone school to those advocating a school similar to those in France. Finally, the common denominator was the pursuit of bilingualism in which codes were separated and languages mastered.
