Abstract
Cet article s’intéresse à la question du syncrétisme religieux au Maghreb et à ses très anciennes racines. Il se propose, ce faisant, d’éclairer certaines zones d’ombre de la réalité nord-africaine, dans laquelle le facteur religieux occupe une place de première importance. Cette question, il la pose à la fois au niveau de l’islam comme religion instituée et à celui de certaines croyances et pratiques religieuses populaires du Maghreb, plus précisément le « culte des saints ». Les tenants de l’orthodoxie musulmane (souvent relayés en cela par le discours rationaliste des sciences humaines) ne voient souvent dans ce culte que déviance hérétique ou survivance du paganisme ancien. À l’encontre de cette vision des choses, cet article montre que la doctrine musulmane offre diverses ouvertures susceptibles de favoriser un processus d’intégration mutuelle entre l’islam et les anciens cultes d’Afrique du nord et, ainsi, de donner naissance à un « islam syncrétiste » typiquement maghrébin.
