Spatio-temporal Analysis of Hazardous Fog: A Case Study of Bahawalpur, Pakistan

Abstract
This study focuses on visibility and duration of fog prevalence, using secondarydata for Pakistan in general and primary data for Bahawalpur district, Punjabprovince. The hazardous nature of fog was probed by calculating the hazardousfog index (HFI); index values were computed using 17 years’ worth of temporaldata from 1997/98 to 2013/14, recorded by the authors at a manual observationstation in Bahawalpur district. The results show significant variations in foghazard across years. Fog that persisted for more hours and created lower visibilitywas associated with high HFI values, indicating its more hazardous nature inseveral respects from the point of view of human activities. The study highlightssome significant impacts of fog on various aspects of human life and suggests someprotective measures and fog-dispersal techniques.Key words: hazardous fog, fog visibility, fog duration, hazardous fog indexCette etude analyse la visibilite et la duree de la presence de brouillard, en utilisantdes donnees secondaires pour le Pakistan et des donnees primaires pour le districtde Bahawalpur dans la province du Pendjab.
