Nous présentons, à partir de quelques éléments de recherche sur les pratiques d'intervention et l'examen de la littérature sur l'interculturalité, une grille conceptuelle visant à articuler l'intervention comme pratique sociale et le contexte de pluriethnicité. Cette représentation schématique permet de poser plusieurs enjeux majeurs dans les rapports entre la pratique professionnelle, en particulier dans le domaine de la santé et des services sociaux, et l'ethnicité : les tensions entre des positions universalisantes et les particularités des différences culturelles et les tensions entre les politiques gouvernementales, celles des organisations, des institutions, des milieux de vie et la prise en compte de ces différences. Saisie dans une dynamique évolutive, l'interculturalité comme forme spécifique d'interaction sociale permet de jeter un regard critique sur d'autres stratégies d'interaction fréquentes dans la pratique et les rapports de pouvoir toujours présents dans les liens établis entre intervenants et interlocuteurs (usagers, patients, collaborateurs) d'une autre culture. Dans tous les cas, la rencontre de cultures différentes est une condition fondamentale de la qualité du vivre ensemble. L'agir professionnel est une des voies privilégiées pour favoriser cette rencontre, et l'un des lieux instituant de l'action sociale.
