Abstract
Annette Boudreau and Isabelle Violette analyze issues related to the construction of linguistic knowledge in a minority setting. The authors show how social change derived from globalization contributes to reshaping Acadian identity which was for a long time based on an image of a pure French language free of outside influences. Since the end of the 19th century, Acadians have in fact promoted their French roots, which explains their determination to maintain archaic forms and their depreciation of everything English. In the new international order, both traditional French forms and English borrowings are being reevaluated and reassigned new symbolic values.
