L’auteure étudie la solitude et l’isolement d’Algonquins âgés de la bande de Kitigan Zibi à partir de la perception du rôle social des aînés qui se dégage de leurs représentations de l’acquisition et de la transmission des valeurs matérielles et culturelles. Ces représentations révèlent des signifiants tels que la terre, le travail des aînés et l’importance du rôle social des personnes âgées dans la communauté actuelle. L’auteure constate que la terre est un élément fondamental de l’identité individuelle et collective, qui traverse toutes les représentations de l’héritage matériel et de l’héritage culturel. Le travail des aînés, qui leur servait de modèle identificatoire dans leur lignée et dans leur communauté, a perdu son sens traditionnel. Tout en restant le moyen d’affirmation de certaines personnes âgées particulièrement impliquées dans la vie communautaire, le rôle social des Algonquins âgés s’est transformé et n’est plus l’élément déterminant du lien social qui fonde la vie communautaire.
