Economic transition in the Canadian north: Is migrant-induced, neo-endogenous development playing a role?

Abstract
Economic transition is necessary to prolong the lifespan of formerly resource-dependent places. This article seeks to discover if migrant-induced, neo-endogenous development is contributing to this process in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada. This once mine-dependent municipality emerged during the Klondike Gold Rush, but has since transitioned into a multi-functional space that capitalizes on its cultural assets. Using survey and interview data, we discover that migrants, particularly southern counterurbanites, have contributed to Dawson’s evolution. Their injection of externally accumulated capital has enhanced the community’s identity, mobilized local labour, and built local factor capacities. Our findings confirm that migrant-induced, neo-endogenous development is contributing to economic transition in this formerly resource-dependent region. Our results have implications for other isolated spaces, hoping to establish new economic identities. Cet article cherche a decouvrir si le developpement neo-endogene du aux migrants contribue a ce processus, a Dawson City au Yukon, au Canada. Cette municipalite autrefois dependante de l'exploitation miniere, emergea lors de la ruee vers l'or de Klondike, mais est depuis devenue un espace multifonctionnel qui capitalise sur ses avantages culturels. A l'aide de sondages et de donnees d'entrevue, nous decouvrons que les migrants, particulierement ceux de la desurbanisation du sud, ont contribue a l'evolution de Dawson. Leurs apports de capitaux externes cumules ont ameliore l'identite de la communaute, mobilise la main-d'œuvre locale, et renforce les capacites locales de facteur. Nos conclusions confirment que les migrants-induits, le developpement neo-endogene contribue a la transition economique dans cette region anciennement dependante des ressources naturelles. Nos resultats ont des repercussions sur d'autres endroits isoles, souhaitant etablir de nouvelles identites economiques.
