Abstract

The linear quarter-car model offers a fast and simple representation for active and semi-active suspension control design. However, this kind of model is independent of geometric characteristics, which have a significant effect on the dynamic behavior of the suspension. This paper proposes considering the geometry of the widely used McPherson suspension to compute equivalent parameters for a quarter-car model. An analytical procedure based on the installation ratio concept has been fully developed not only for linear but also for non-linear spring stiffness. The proposed solution has been validated against a realistic Adams/View multibody model. The accuracy of the transient responses for displacement and acceleration of the sprung mass has been improved with respect to a quarter car model with conventional parameters.
