Abstract
“Tobias Barreto, agente negro de tradução” visa destacar a contribuição do filósofo, tradutor e visionário mestiço, natural do estado de Sergipe, não só na história da tradução no Brasil como também na formação de um pensamento identitário tipicamente brasileiro. Neste sentido, mostra-se que o qualificativo “agente de tradução” convém perfeitamente a Tobias Barreto. O que há de particular em seu trabalho é que ele próprio se implicou em todas as etapas do processo tradutório, seja pela tradução stricto sensu — como transferência linguística — até a difusão de suas obras — enquanto produto material, objeto reificado —, passando pela confecção material destas — a impressão, a paginação etc. A partir da década de 1870, o projeto tradutório de Barreto toma uma direção essencialmente voltada para a promoção do germanismo. O artigo apresenta os suportes e as consequências dessa posição ideológica.
