La catégorie sociale « jeunesse » est marquée par une dualité fondamentale : il y a toujours des jeunes, mais ce ne sont jamais les mêmes. Ils « vieillissent », et l’article tente précisément de les situer par rapport à un avenir. Deux réalités contrastées permettent de cadrer cette problématique : celle d’un pays du Sahel, où l’école reste marginale, et celle de Genève, canton suisse où la formation postobligatoire est pratiquement devenue obligation sociale. C’est dire que les jeunes y investissent dans la formation, même s’ils ne le font pas tous avec conviction, ni avec les mêmes moyens et chances. La formation crée notamment des différences concrètes entre jeunes, quant au moment, aux conditions, à la matérialisation d’un « choix » professionnel. Les recherches montrent une certaine insatisfaction par rapport à la formation professionnelle, Et pourtant, les jeunes y investissent, malgré un avenir incertain. C’est qu’ils n’ont pas réellement d’alternative au modèle dominant de passage de l’« école à la vie active ».
