Abstract
The 1840s were a transformative decade in the Canadas. Institutions emerged, businesses and railways burgeoned, new bureaucracies and political alliances took shape. Professionals of that era witnessed another new development as the criteria of acceptable behaviour shifted. The richly documented life of Louis-Joseph Papineau illustrates how a towering hero of 1837 came to be vilified in the 1840s. When he first emulated the non-combatant role of the American founding fathers such as Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, Papineau followed the respected path of orator and democratic man of letters, winning great acclaim. In the 1840s, though, influential political colleagues decided his approach fell short by modern measures of middle-class masculinity: the citizen soldier and the fraternal man more devoted to collective action than to eloquence. This examination of Papineau as a man of letters explores shifting gender notions as well as shifting rhetorical practices during his lifetime. It also assesses the enduring contributions of the famous French-Canadian patriot.
