Comunidades de corales pétreos en la costa norte de Ciego de Avila, Cuba

Abstract
Durante el año 2002 se evaluaron comunidades de corales pétreos en arrecifes de los Cayos Paredón Grande, Coco y Guillermo, ubicados al norte de la provincia de Ciego de Ávila. Se estudió el cubrimiento del sustrato por coral vivo, la densidad de colonias, la composición por especies y su abundancia porcentual, así como la salud de los corales, para lo cual se utilizaron transectos lineales de 10 m. Se identificaron 24 especies. La más abundantes en las crestas (1-2 m) fueron Millepora complanata, Porites astreoides y Acropora palmata con tallas promedios de 45, 25 y 80 cm respectivamente. En el escarpe (10-12 m) fueron abundantes los géneros Montastraea, Siderastrea y Agaricia, sus tallas promedios variaron entre 50, 30 y 20 cm respectivamente. La cobertura por coral vivo mostró valores entre 10 y 25% y la densidad promedio de colonias de coral fue de 8 colonias/10 m. El porcentaje de superficie afectada por mortalidad antigua varió entre 30-40%. Estos resultados constituyen una línea base que servirá de punto de referencia para evaluar posibles impactos humanos en esta importante área turística de Cuba.
