Abstract
Dans ce mémoire, nous aborderons les questions du rêve, du temps et de l’identité dans trois livres de Dany Laferrière : L’Odeur du café [1991], Je suis un écrivain japonais [2008] et L’Enigme du retour [2009]. Ce premier récit propose une remémoration des souvenirs d’un jeune garçon qui grandit à Petit-Goave en Haïti avec sa grand-mère. Il fait la narration de son enfance tout en démontrant l’espoir d’un peuple vivant sous la dictature de Duvalier. Dans Je suis un écrivain japonais, Laferrière aborde la question de l’appartenance. Est-il possible de se réclamer d’un pays étranger à celui dans lequel on est né ? Laferrière lui-même se sent appartenir à plusieurs pays. L‘Énigme du retour raconte le « retour au pays natal » de Laferrière après la mort de son père. Il s’agit, aussi, d’un voyage dans le temps pour un écrivain qui a quitté Haïti pour vivre en exil à Montréal il y a trente-trois ans. À travers ces trois livres, nous chercherons à démontrer comment Laferrière emploie un style magico-réaliste. Cette recherche contribue à l’étude de l’œuvre de Laferrière et à la façon dont elle participe de l’identité québécoise et haïtienne.
