Abstract
“George Eliot and Victorian Islamophobia (Felix Holt’s Colonial Subject),” considers the treatment of Islam in Eliot’s works, including Daniel Deronda. It focuses on the representation of the Ottoman empire, Ottoman slavery, and the anti-colonial war of independence in Greece as figured in the absent presence of a colonized Greek subject and former Ottoman slave in Felix Holt. In light of a consideration of texts that influenced Eliot’s understanding of Islam, such as works by Emmanuel Deutsch, R. Bosworth Smith, Eugène Bodichon, and a cluster of essays from the Fortnightly Review that Lewes was editing as Eliot was writing Felix Holt, this chapter examines an abject, absent colonial figure who may be Eliot’s sole Muslim character. It also examines the textual confusion about Harold’s wives and its homoerotic undertones.
